Virtual Reality Laboratory
The Ottawa Hospital and the Canadian Military has joined forces to offer physical and mental rehabilitation for patients. This partnership will
bring a ground breaking virtual reality laboratory to The Ottawa Hospital Rehabilitation Centre.
The Rehabilitation Virtual Reality Laboratory is:
- State of the art tool to rehabilitate patients with difficulties in areas such as balance, coordination and post traumatic stress disorder
- A moveable patient platform with a wraparound floor to ceiling video screen and a computer system allows therapists to measure and study the patient’s responses to the changing environments
- An interactive virtual environment that completely immerses the patient
What are the benefits?
- By being immersed in a virtual environment, patients are distracted from their pain, as they learn to walk again or regain their balance
- Wounded soldiers from across Eastern Canada will have access to cutting edge rehabilitation
- The system enables a collective approach between rehabilitation experts, orthopedics, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, neurologists, mental health and research
- The system will increase the efficiency in therapeutic programs, facilitating faster integration back into the community
- This system will allow therapists to create environments that are not currently possible in other rehabilitation settings in Canada
